I’m a Blogger, so I’m stupid, right?

I’m a Blogger, so I’m stupid, right?

Hey Lovelies,

Today’s blog post is going to be a little different from usual, as I want to talk about something that I’ve seen on social media that, well, infuriated me.

Twitter is a wonderful place, great for interacting with brands, celebs, bloggers etc etc, but I’ve found that it’s also one of the most negative places on the internet; people express their opinion only to be shot down by others and attacked by a flood of nasty comments about their weight, appearance and lifestyle. But these are not the comments that I want to discuss today. Today I want to talk about the idea that is prevailing that bloggers only blog because we’re stupid, uneducated and clearly too dumb to do anything else.

Most of you probably know that I’m doing a degree in English Language, and with that degree I could be a teacher, journalist, I could even be the person who creates fake languages for movies (because yes, that’s a thing. You didn’t think that Parseltongue from Harry Potter was just a bunch of hissing noises did you?!). And yet, I don’t want to do any of those things with my degree, I want to blog. Does that mean I’m stupid? Would you think better of me if I told you I want to be a teacher?

I am fortunate in so much that I have never experienced real negativity online, but every time I see these comments I feel an instant wave of anger because they’re not just targeted at one person, they’re a generalised attack towards bloggers. And yes, everyone is entitled to their opinion, I’ll be the first person to say that. But if something is incorrect and hurtful can you still use the “I’m entitled to my opinion” card to justify your negativity and nastiness?

The point is is that most people who blog do it alongside their GSCE’S, A- Levels, Degrees, Jobs, and we are far from stupid. And if you manage to make a career out of blogging, then you are definitely #Goals.

What’s worse is that most of these comments seem to be targeted at Beauty Bloggers, and I’m wondering why people find it so shocking that I can slay winged eyeliner and have an opinion on Britain leaving the EU?

I don’t usually address negativity, I think it’s better to ignore it, but telling someone that doing something they love makes them stupid because you have no idea of the work, dedication and time that goes into blogging is downright ignorant. There is so much more to running a blog than snapping a few photos and sharing your opinion. There’s the late night blog writing, the awkward angles trying to get the perfect photo, the never ending stress if a post doesn’t perform as well as you thought it would. There’s the desperation to have a pretty Instagram, to have loads of interaction on Twitter, and don’t even get me started on trying to grow a following on Facebook (No, I don’t want to pay to boost my posts. *rolls eyes*). And trust me when I tell you that that’s not even the half of it.

All of that being said, this was negativity that I just could not ignore. Because the truth is, we don’t blog because we’re stupid. We blog because we’re hard working and intelligent enough to run a blog. And because you don’t hear it enough, here is a huge shoutout to all of the amazing bloggers reading this!

If you’ve made it to the end of this post, then thank you very much for reading. I am so grateful for every person who reads my blog, and to all of you who don’t think that I’m stupid for doing it. I’m also extremely proud to be part of a community of beautiful, intelligent and talented bloggers who inspire me and thousands of others every single day!

If you have enjoyed this post, or want to share your thoughts about it then please leave me a comment!

Thank you for reading,

Alex

xoxo

Brilliant post! I was shocked to see some of the things people were saying a few nights ago on Twitter. I mean a grown man in his 50’s basically telling a 20-something woman that beauty bloggers are uneducated and dumb. Where’s this world going? And the fact that there are a lot of people out there who think the same way as this middle-aged man. People need to realise that for most of us blogging is a hobby and like you said we do it alongside our jobs and uni studies or whatever. There are only a rare few out there who actually make a living out of blogging. Yes, I can be a law student and also write about my favourite liquid lipsticks, deal with it people.

That grown man inspired this blog post… I saw those comments and was shocked and disgusted. Exactly, the fact that you study law instantly indicates that you’re far from stupid, but the fact you can study law whilst slaying a liquid lip.. gurlll you are #goals!xx

I loved this post because I agree with you 100%. We can be entitled to our own opinions about politics and feminism and anything that is going on in the world but why can’t we look hella pretty doing it. I’ve had some people slate me for my opinions because I’m a beauty therapist and there’s always been a stereo type that anybody doing beauty is dumb. When in actual fact, I’m pretty damn intelligent and my boss even told me the other day “I’ve had a lot of girls come through here but you by far are the most intelligent”.

Yes, I spend a lot of time primping and preening myself to look good and I, just like you, word bloody damn hard on my blog too, just like all the rest of the bloggers out there I’m sure and to be told we’re not intelligent enough is wrong and I stand with you and say negativity should maybe be addressed a little bit more and closed-minded people really need to re-evaluate all of their reasons before coming up with a general assumption about people.

I’m really sorry I’ve had a rant, feel awful now writing so much. I’ve just sat here and been a keyboard warrior. Absolutely loved this post Alex, one of my faves.

    Love Han xx

This comment is amazing! Don’t apologise for it, I’m so glad that I’m not the only one who thinks like this… these terrible stereotypes need to stop now! Thank you so much for reading the post, I’m so glad that you liked it, my fellow scouse blogger!xx

Girl I am so with you. I think I know what sparked this blog post. I’m like the FBI of Twitter. I had thought about posting something similar, but you’ve taken the words out my mouth. Well done chick xxx

You probably do know what sparked it, and I have to say I was horrified by that incident! Thank you so much for your comment and for reading the post, I’m glad that you enjoyed it and that I’m not the only one who feels this way!xxx

You’ve got this 100% right! I get really offended sometime by the things people say about bloggers because it’s something that I chose to do and something that I spend a hell of a lot of time and energy on. It’s so refreshing to see somebody address it like you have!

    • June 28, 2016 / 5:14 pm

Thank you! Exactly, we put so much time and energy into these things and for people to brush them off to easily is upsetting and out of order! Keep up the fab work on your blog doll and don’t let anyone dull your sparkle!xx

This is so perfect! Thank you for being the one to stand up and say what needed to be said!

Thank you so much! I just figured that it was about time someone said something, I’m so sick of negativity!xx

This post says everything. Bloggers work hard every single god damn day to produce content they’re proud of struggling against light, timings, social media presence, other bloggers, it’s not easy!! I feel under pressure now because I have so many posts/reviews to write and I wonder where i’m going to find the time!! I don’t want to disappoint the brands but I also do not want to produce content which is half-assed because I want to get it out there as quickly as possible!! UGH. The struggle is real girls and we need to hold each other up instead of be-littling and tearing each other down!
We are not stupid. We are clever, intelligent women with a voice who want to share their opinions with the world, not matter what they are!! Yes we actually do have an opinion on the EU because you know what?! Young people these days are far more likely to read a blogger’s account of the EU situation than a load of bullshit (sorry!) that’s churned out by whichever side happens to be writing at the time!!!! I know I did!!
We are the voice of the now and the future so you best listen up and start recognising because who is your daughter/sister/aunt/mom going to turn to when they want an unbiased opinion on who to vote for!?!!?!? Yeah that’s right!!!!!
Fab Post Alex, please do more!!!
    Sarah

Sarah thank you so so much for this brilliant comment! I totally feel you with having loads to review and not enough time to do it, and you’re definitely right that we need to uplift one another instead of dragging each other down! As for politics, I’m sick of seeing people shut down the opinions of bloggers and using “blogger” as an insult… we should be proud to be bloggers and influencers!

I’m so glad that you enjoyed the post and I will definitely do more like it in the future!xx

    Such a great post!
I actually came off fb just after christmas, the negativity on there from what are suppose to be friends is ridiculous. It made depressed and anxious,it’s one of the reasons i don’t blog about lifestyle,to keep it short i got some very upsetting messages from a total stranger. They didn’t know me but felt the need to express their disgust at the fact i had two autistic children.I’ve learn’t over the past year to scroll past negativity,i try not let other peoples views affect my life, accepting not everyone thinks the same way and its made me less stressed.
You should be so proud of your blog, how you’ve constructed your theme and how you create the most captivating content. It’s very hard to not ramble on here with my comment but i totally understand how trolls can get to you.
Keep up the great work girl, keep them hating 😉 xxx

    • June 28, 2016 / 6:57 pm

I am so sorry that you experienced such horrible negativity- there’s no need for it, and I’m sure your children are beautiful! Being autistic doesn’t make them less than any other children! It’s definitely better to scroll past the negative comments because the people making them are the ones who are unhappy.

Thank you so much! I’m constantly trying to improve but I’m not ashamed to say that I am proud of my blog and of all the work I put into it! But you should be proud too, keep at it and never let anyone stop you from doing what you love!xx

Great post. I totally agree with what you said; I studied chemical engineering at ucl and I think I’m far from stupid haha. Also, I didn’t know that parseltongue was a language *hides face*. Thanks for educating me on that

    • June 28, 2016 / 10:04 pm

That’s so amazing, shoutout to you for studying what must be one of the hardest uni courses! Ahaha I didn’t know either until I started uni… imagine how cool it must be creating languages as your job!xx

This is such a brilliant post!!!
Eventhoug I try and keep is as quiet as possible I find that I get that exact reaction all the time. I’m in my final year studying animation and web design and find that people either think that I’m wasting my time or that Im a air head for having an interest in beauty and fashion… I don’t see why its alright for other people that have other interest such as sport, but as soon as its blogging they have a problem!?

Thank you for such a lovely post! I think its very important that we talk about this issue!

    Love
    Chantell
