Today’s blog post is going to be a little different from usual, as I want to talk about something that I’ve seen on social media that, well, infuriated me.
Twitter is a wonderful place, great for interacting with brands, celebs, bloggers etc etc, but I’ve found that it’s also one of the most negative places on the internet; people express their opinion only to be shot down by others and attacked by a flood of nasty comments about their weight, appearance and lifestyle. But these are not the comments that I want to discuss today. Today I want to talk about the idea that is prevailing that bloggers only blog because we’re stupid, uneducated and clearly too dumb to do anything else.
Most of you probably know that I’m doing a degree in English Language, and with that degree I could be a teacher, journalist, I could even be the person who creates fake languages for movies (because yes, that’s a thing. You didn’t think that Parseltongue from Harry Potter was just a bunch of hissing noises did you?!). And yet, I don’t want to do any of those things with my degree, I want to blog. Does that mean I’m stupid? Would you think better of me if I told you I want to be a teacher?
I am fortunate in so much that I have never experienced real negativity online, but every time I see these comments I feel an instant wave of anger because they’re not just targeted at one person, they’re a generalised attack towards bloggers. And yes, everyone is entitled to their opinion, I’ll be the first person to say that. But if something is incorrect and hurtful can you still use the “I’m entitled to my opinion” card to justify your negativity and nastiness?
The point is is that most people who blog do it alongside their GSCE’S, A- Levels, Degrees, Jobs, and we are far from stupid. And if you manage to make a career out of blogging, then you are definitely #Goals.
What’s worse is that most of these comments seem to be targeted at Beauty Bloggers, and I’m wondering why people find it so shocking that I can slay winged eyeliner and have an opinion on Britain leaving the EU?
I don’t usually address negativity, I think it’s better to ignore it, but telling someone that doing something they love makes them stupid because you have no idea of the work, dedication and time that goes into blogging is downright ignorant. There is so much more to running a blog than snapping a few photos and sharing your opinion. There’s the late night blog writing, the awkward angles trying to get the perfect photo, the never ending stress if a post doesn’t perform as well as you thought it would. There’s the desperation to have a pretty Instagram, to have loads of interaction on Twitter, and don’t even get me started on trying to grow a following on Facebook (No, I don’t want to pay to boost my posts. *rolls eyes*). And trust me when I tell you that that’s not even the half of it.
All of that being said, this was negativity that I just could not ignore. Because the truth is, we don’t blog because we’re stupid. We blog because we’re hard working and intelligent enough to run a blog. And because you don’t hear it enough, here is a huge shoutout to all of the amazing bloggers reading this!
If you’ve made it to the end of this post, then thank you very much for reading. I am so grateful for every person who reads my blog, and to all of you who don’t think that I’m stupid for doing it.
